Playing triggers reward centers in cats’ brains. It also provides mental stimulation, physical exercise, bonding opportunities, and builds confidence, trust and independence.
The benefits of playing with your cat are many. There are however some ways when playing with your cat can go wrong. Visitors and children should be given boundaries. Shaking a loud toy in front of a timid cat will increase its fear, and likely leave a lasting wariness of strangers.
If you have a cat that is apprehensive about playing, start slowly, be gentle, and take little steps.
There are many rechargeable toys available. These toys are fabulous and have some crazy movements. Unless you have a super confident cat, introduce electronic toys with sensitivity. Your cat might not, at first, share your excitement. The new sounds and movements could cause anxiety, and your cat may want to initially observe from a distance.
Lazer toys have a place, but they have no tangible reward. Use these sparingly to avoid frustration.
Puzzle toys are great, and you will be impressed by your cat’s ingenuity!
Cats don’t get bored of playing, but they do get bored of playing with the same toy. Have a selection of toys that you rotate. Old toys become new toys if they have been out of sight for a while.
Our teaser toys are designed to mimic the actions of cats’ ground and air prey. Move them in erratic and unpredictable ways, changing the rhythm, and speed. Observe your cat’s lowered body, flattened ears, dilated pupils, slightly twitching tail, then the pounce! Set your cat up for success by allowing him to sometimes “catch” the lure.
Our self-play toys are made from soft and organic materials, with the additional fascination of feathers, leather or tough cotton string. Some of our toys incorporate subtle, cat-captivating sounds. Our stuffing includes Feline Fizz, our own blend of local and exotic cat intoxicating herbs.
